Am I networking—or entering somebody's workflow?

·

More and more of my LinkedIn inbox feels less like people reaching out and more like automated workflows adding me to a sequence.

Especially with recruitment and sales messages, I sometimes wonder whether anyone is actually reading the conversation, or whether my reply is just triggering the next step.

I can’t tell how every message was written. But I can tell when my answer has been ignored.

AI isn’t the problem

I use AI to improve my writing, and I have no issue with other people doing the same. Clarify an idea. Improve the English. Shorten a draft. Make a technical explanation easier to understand.

The important part is that someone still owns the thought, checks the message, and takes responsibility for what it says.

What bothers me is being invited into a conversation that nobody on the other side seems to be having.

A message mentions something from my profile. I ask a specific question. The reply skips it, repeats the pitch, and offers a calendar link. A few days later, another follow-up arrives as though I never answered.

Was it AI? A scheduled sequence? A person working through templates?

I don’t necessarily know. From my side, the problem is the same: nobody appears to be listening.

Personalization isn’t the same as attention

Here’s an example.

Someone contacts me about a product. I ask how it fits my existing setup and what problem it would solve.

Instead of answering, they send another paragraph about the benefits and ask whether I have 15 minutes next week.

Mentioning my company in the opening line doesn’t make that a meaningful exchange. Answering my question would.

I understand why recruiters and sales teams automate parts of their work. They handle high volumes, and reminders, scheduling, and drafting can take time away from useful conversations.

But if the automation saves your time by repeatedly wasting mine, it isn’t a good experience for the person you’re trying to reach.

Someone still needs to own the conversation

I don’t expect every message to be typed from scratch. I do expect someone to understand why they’re contacting me, read what I say, and respond. Or bring in someone who can.

That’s my boundary:

Use AI to edit your thoughts. But if your entire funnel is AI, I’ll ignore you.

Not because the writing sounds artificial. Because there’s little point in giving my attention to an exchange that nobody on the other side is taking responsibility for.
